Create and justify a planned animation (P5, P6)

Learning Objective:

P5: Create the content for the animation

Learning Outcome 3: Be able to create a planned animation

The lighting of the animation was a lamp that I had and used near the set of the production.

When making the characters I realised that the clay I used didn't stick to my green screen as well as I hoped it would. As a solution, the characters in my animation had paper clips in their feet to make them more stable.

When applying the green paper to my background I solely used glue as an adhesive.  Anything else could run the potential of ruining the set or potential gluing the figures to it.

For the camera I used a GoPro because of the high resolution photographs it takes and the wide angled lens which allowed me to face it very near the set of the animation

Because of the low angled set and my lack of tripod, to prop the GoPro up I used Lego and Blacktack to ensure there would be minimal movement of the GoPro inbetween photographs taken.

A photo of me using a microphone to record my dialogue and foley noises into my phone.
When recording the speech needed for my production I used my phone's microphone and a simple recording app which allowed me to label my recordings as to not get confused when editing them into the film.

My Storyboard (P5,P6)

I am going to be sure to follow the overall storyboard with exception to some of the angles in the final two shots that, in the end, weren't practical for a low budget stop motion film like mine. As well as the last two shots, I am going to be unable to film the second shot in the storyboard. The shot will need to be scraped because of the fragility of the clay meaning that a hand and beaker would be out of the question when trying to mould it together.
By using a green screen background, I could manipulate the different backplates required for the storyboard's different backgrounds. The green screen also allows me to manipulate the lengths of the shots (the last two shots have dramatically different close ups to the prior shots).
All my original material follows this storyboard. I'm happy with the characters I created and my intended backplates.

While making my advertisement I used monday.com to check my progress and to see how much was left to be done. I was sure to use this production schedule so that I could keep on track. I didn't require the help of anyone else - all sound effects were crested by me (as pictured above).

(P6) Complete and edit the animation

Log Sheet
I used this log sheet to determine whether the footage I had was appropriate to the final production. I was happy with the duration of the shots and with my decision to cut some of the final shots I had originally included within my storyboard. The time codes and descriptions as outlined in my log sheet will help with the final production piece.

Above is my offline edit, which I have created to ensure that the images are sequenced properly and cut at the right length. I haven't adjusted any frame rates for this offline edit, as I needed it to ensure that the storyboard plan followed the content produced. The only changes I have made are explained above in my discussion surrounding the storyboard. I haven't added in the chroma key, but did change the background during the offline edit creation so that I could see if it worked well.

After completing the visuals of the animation, I decided to first add in my foley effects and sound effects that I found online for free.

Voice and sound recordings were included from my storyboard to show the different voices used in the animation. The sound effects and music, however, weren't included in the storyboard.

When adding in foley recordings, I made sure to label the recordings accordingly to the sounds made in said recordings

On YouTube I found a copy write free bite sound effect which I decided to add in to the animation when Carl the janitor gets bitten

After the voice recordings and sound effects were added in, I decided to add in the animation's music namely the song Down With The Sickness by Disturbed
Music from the song was added in during the action heavy scenes of the animation. The loud music paired with the large frame rate helped connote to the viewer that the scenes were the focal action points of the production.

After adding in the music I decided to add in the dialogue for the production between the main two characters, the Janitor and the Scientist.

When adding in the dialogue for the animation, I used the same method of labelling the files with their contents as I did with the foley effects I added earlier in the production stage.

After finishing my production I decided to go over the backgrounds one last time before exporting the file. During this final check, I realised that the video background I used for the lab, while making the scene seem more realistic by making it seem like it was taking place in an actual lab, took away from the legitimacy of the animation because of the lack of ground for the characters to stand on. I therefore replaced the video background with an image of a lab, of which I animated a floor for the characters to stand on. This decision was ultimately beneficial to the animation because it ended up making the animation maintain its legitimacy with the low cost of having a still background.
